former president donald trump The CNBC host stumbled and gave rambling answers while hosting the show. andrew ross sortin I asked him about the TikTok ban.
President Trump recently announced his opposition to banning TikTok in a rant that included offensive and anti-Semitic attacks on Facebook. mark zuckerberg. It’s a reversal from his position when he was president.
every monday edition CNBC squawk boxMr. Sorkin confronted Mr. Trump over the flip, and the answer was travel.
Andrew Ross Sorkin: Mr. President, while we’re talking about China, I’d like to ask you about perhaps the biggest business story and policy story of our time. That’s TikTok. You’ve called TikTok a national security threat. At one point you said that “data collection could give the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans’ personal and sensitive information,” but now you’ve reversed your stance on banning TikTok. It seems like you did. Why is that? Donald Trump: So I did it. And Congress said, they never fail, they usually fail in the end (laughter), you know, they’re like the villains, they’re very political, they happen to be very very very dependent on people called lobbyists who are very talented and very rich. You could also ban TikTok. You could have done that just because it was banned. But I said, you know what? But I’ll leave that to you.
I didn’t push them too hard. Because let them do their own R&D and they decided not to do it. But you know, I was at a stage where I could do it if I wanted to. To. I said, ‘You guys make that decision because it’s a tough decision. Frankly, there’s a lot of people on TikTok who love it.’ TikTok doesn’t have that without it. There are a lot of young kids who get hooked on it. There are many users. There are a lot of good and bad things about TikTok, but what I don’t like is that Facebook can be big without TikTok. And I think Facebook, like much of the media, is an enemy of the people. What Facebook did with Zuckerberg’s $500 million of his $500 million was a locked box that he put in a locked box. I mean, I thought it was illegal. But they put people in jail for spending money, he goes to jail if he spends more than $5,600 on a campaign, he goes to jail if he spends $200. Look at Dinesh D’Souza, they spent hundreds of dollars more to put him in jail, but this guy spent half a billion dollars and didn’t go to jail. Andrew Ross Sorkin: The President, but on TikTok. But do you think TikTok is a national security threat? Because if it is, and I believe you are too, the emergency powers order that you issued at the time says, Was that not true? Donald Trump: I believe so. I believe it. And we must take privacy seriously and ensure that Americans’ privacy and data rights are protected. I agree with that too, but you know, we have that problem with other people, you guys have the same problem with Facebook and a lot of other people. They’ll get information, they’ll get a lot of information, they’ll do business with China, they’ll do whatever China wants. If you look at some of the American companies, people think of highly sophisticated companies as American, but they’re not very American. They trade with China, and if China wants something from them, they trade with China. they will give it to you. So it’s also a national security risk. But when you look at it, I don’t think he’s going to double the size of Facebook. If you ban TikTok, Facebook, etc., Facebook will be the main beneficiary. ANDREW ROSS SORKIN: Mr. President, you recently met with hedge fund manager Jeff Yass, who is involved in TikTok stock. He is a huge donor to the Republican Party. Steve Bannon suggested that you may have been rewarded and should change your perspective. How has your perspective changed? How did that happen? And did you have a conversation with Jeff Yass about that? Donald Trump: No, I didn’t. I only met him briefly. I gave a speech and greeted him. And a wonderful wife. And in fact, her main interest was education. She wants choice, just like I do. And most of all she talked to me about education. It was a few minutes meeting. No, I only met one person, I met both of them. And, you know, I never am. I don’t think I’ve ever met him before, but he never mentioned Tik Tok. She mentioned school choice, and in fact, she said that’s why everything in my life is based on school. Her choice was very important to her.
president joe biden When asked about the ban on TikTok, gagged With reporters before boarding Air Force One Friday. His answer was quite short.
Q Mr. President, do you still support banning TikTok? Would you please sign that bill? THE PRESIDENT: If they pass, I will sign it.
