Following his nomination, Canadian actor Ryan Gosling criticized his Barbie co-star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig for being disrespected by the Oscars.
Gosling, who played Robbie’s Barbie doll Ken, was nominated for Best Supporting Actor on Tuesday.
“To say I am disappointed that they were not nominated in their respective categories is an understatement,” Gosling, who grew up in Ontario, said in a statement.
Gerwig was expected to be nominated for Best Director, and Robbie was expected to be nominated for Best Actress.
Gosling acknowledged on Tuesday: “There would be no Ken without Barbie, and there would be no Barbie without Greta Gerwig and Margo Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making and world-famous film.” Ta.
“They made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they promoted our culture, and they made history. Their accomplishments should be recognized along with other very deserving candidates,” Gosling said.
Barbie took on a life of its own as a bubblegum-pink cultural phenomenon, and was not only a critically acclaimed film, but also grossed $612 million in North America, making it the highest-grossing film of the year. It was also a blockbuster hit that earned .
This wasn’t Gerwig’s first Best Director snub. She wasn’t nominated for Little Women in 2019, but a year earlier she was recognized for Lady Bird.
Barbie received eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The 96th Academy Awards ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel on March 10th.
