North Shore Rescue (NSR) announced on Saturday afternoon that they had rescued a hiker who was stranded on the back cliffs of Mt Frome.
Search manager Dave Barnett told CityNews the call was received just after 3pm and the rescue was completed by 6:30pm.
“We safely got this man out by helicopter,” Barnett said. “He was stuck on a cliff. He couldn’t go up or down. So we knew just from his location that it would be a helicopter rescue.”
Although it was not possible to rescue the victim right away due to cloud cover, they were able to take a break after about 30 minutes.
“The man was a little shaken up, but otherwise unharmed and safe,” he said.
Barnett said the call was a reminder of what he needed to do to stay safe while hiking.
“Leave early, plan your trip, research the area you’re going to and make sure you’re properly equipped,” he said. “But we don’t advise people to follow road maps for navigation, especially when it comes to this area. One of them has an error in this area. It’s like a trail in this very dangerous terrain. It shows there’s something visible. It’s not a trail at all. We’re working with Google Maps to erase that line.
The most recent rescue from this area took place in September. A climber got stuck on a cliff and called 911, telling the operator, “I’m holding on, but I don’t know how long I can hold on.” This hiker Afterwards, the rescue was successful.. In May 2021, another hiker He was found dead in the same area after getting lost.
