Colin Lam has a solid group of five friends who play tabletop games on a regular basis, and after they moved, Lam came to Guelph and started the Guelph Tabletop Gaming Club to meet his gaming needs. I filled it.
“In the end, we all went our separate ways,” Lamb said. “So it’s very difficult to get everyone together again.”
He moved to Guelph a year ago and started the club about three months ago as a way to bring people together with similar interests.
The group meets at the Round Table on Essex Street on Fridays at 7 p.m. Discuss the parameters of the game with your group in advance. discord Audio, video and text platform. So far, more than a dozen people have joined the club.
“Ideally, it would grow to include everyone who is interested,” Lamb said.
The group breaks up into small groups and plays separate tabletop games.
“It sounds very trite, but it can be anything you want. When we were children, we sometimes lived out our role-playing fantasies by pretending to be a knight going to save a village from anything. I like to think that’s the case,” Lamb said.
“Tabletop gaming is essentially a framework for doing it with a group of friends,” he said.
Lamb said many of the members are new to Guelph. “Many of them have tabletop experience, and many of them have been interested for a long time and have been looking for an opportunity to meet people who are playing,” he said.
Lam has been playing tabletop games since he was 15 years old. During the pandemic, he was part of a group playing Dungeons and Dragons. The tabletop game lasted a year and a half.
At the Guelph Tabletop Gaming Club, gaming could be even more exciting than previous weeks. At certain points, games can last anywhere from a few hours to almost 8 hours.
All ages are welcome to join the club. There are a few rules Lam recommends. “Strive to be inclusive and be sensitive to other people’s preferences. If there are boundaries, try to respect them,” he said.
Some club members may prefer to play tabletop games with sci-fi, fantasy, or other types of storylines.
Sometimes people bring in figurines representing characters from the game.
“As part of a pretty in-depth session, a friend of mine brought in these very elaborate dragon mugs,” Lamb said. “The idea was to make the atmosphere a little more immersive. We were all pretending to be in a pub.”
