Mark Carney will be running for Liberal Party leadership at an event in Edmonton on Thursday, according to a notice from Calgary Skyview MP George Chahal.
The former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England will join the race, along with already announced Ottawa MPs Chandra Arya, Nova Scotia MP Jaime Batiste and former Liberal MP Frank Bayliss.
“At a time of global challenges and economic opportunity, Mark Carney has the experience and experience needed to meet these challenges and capitalize on the opportunities,” Chahal said in an email to supporters. He has leadership ability.”

The Liberal Party will elect its next leader, and Canada’s next prime minister, on March 9. Applicants must declare their candidacy by January 23rd. People can register with the party to vote in the leadership election until January 27.
Mr. Chahal’s announcement said Mr. Carney is a Liberal candidate in the mold of Lester B. Pearson, a “great public servant who aspired to elective office after a distinguished career.”
Despite Alberta being a Conservative stronghold, Carney has launched a campaign to draw attention to his roots in the province, where he grew up and attended high school. Carney was born in Fort Smith, N.S.
“Growing up in Alberta instilled in Mark a spirit of hard work and perseverance that unites us across the province,” the Chahal Tribe’s announcement said. “This background gives him a unique perspective that best represents the interests of all Canadians.”
The news comes a day after Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne and former B.C. Premier Christy Clark each announced they would not run.
