Jade Bryant and Jeremy Whetten set a ‘Stacked Burger Challenge’ record by eating 14 patty cheeseburgers each
It doesn’t get more adventurous than this.
The Sioux’s Jade Bryant and Echo Bay’s Jeremy Whetten are probably still feeling full after completing the daunting Stackburger Challenge this Wednesday.
Two friends each managed to devour a 14-patty cheeseburger at a downtown eatery within 90 minutes, beating the record of 13 patties held by an out-of-towner.
“At first, it wasn’t that bad, it didn’t seem that big,” Whetten said. sue today. “But as soon as I started jumping into it, I knew it was going to be difficult.”
Bryant and Whetten, who had never participated in a food challenge before, agreed at the last minute to go for the record, but only on the condition that they both eat the entire thing.
“We wanted to do it together,” Bryant said. “But if one of us couldn’t finish the burger, we weren’t going to finish it at all. We wanted to share the record together.”
“We didn’t even prepare for it. We just kind of jumped right in,” Whetten laughed. “But it was really nice to do it with Jade. It was great that we could support each other throughout.”
Bryant, who was live-streaming the experience on Facebook, got off to a fast start, feeling confident in his ability to eat a burger from the jump.
Then, the harsh reality began to dawn on me.
“I had high expectations because I was able to eat four patties in less than seven minutes,” Bryant said. “But it took about 20 minutes to unload his next three patties, and about 40 minutes to make the rest of the burger. I didn’t think it would be difficult, but it was.”
“It wasn’t the amount of food that was the problem, it was the cheese and fat,” he added. “The last few patties were pretty rough and it was hard to eat the last bite.”
Thirty minutes after his friend crossed the finish line, Whetten took the final bite, setting a shared record.
“I didn’t think I would be able to do it at first, so it was a relief to actually be able to finish it all,” Weten said. “It was a crazy experience.”
To recognize their success, Stackburger gave them free T-shirts and shared congratulatory posts on social media. This has received hundreds of reactions and comments over the past three days.
The duo also won the right to change the name of the burger, which will now be known as the Jade and Jeremy Duo Burger.
Will there be a record? Two friends have different views.
“I don’t know if anyone can break this record, but I encourage it,” Bryant said. “I’ve never been a big eater, but when it comes to food, that was very close to my personal limit. And I don’t really have a limit.”
“I don’t think this record will last long,” Whetten added. “Some of the comments were that someone was already trying to break the record, so it won’t be long.”
Buoyed by their successful outing, Bryant and Weten are ready to take on more food challenges in the future, but they hope more local restaurants will offer them.
“I think it’s different in Sault Ste. Marie has a lot of trouble with food around here to begin with,” Bryant admitted. “If we had more, we would definitely play against them.”
“I think Sue could really benefit from that,” Weten added. “I think a lot of people are going to really enjoy it and it brings everyone together. We definitely need more eating challenges.”
