Government House of Commons Leader Karina Gould confirmed on Saturday afternoon that she is running for Liberal leadership, making her the youngest candidate ever to step into the ring to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“We need new leaders to fight for Canada’s everyday lives. Leaders who understand what people are going through and who work every day to make their lives better,” Gould said in a video posted to social media. “is necessary,” he said.
“I’m here for Canada. Today, tomorrow and for years to come,” Gould said.
The Burlington, Ont., MP was elected in 2015 and has served in Trudeau’s cabinet since 2017. Mr Gould first held the Democratic Institutions portfolio and then became Minister for International Development.
Following the 2021 federal election, Mr Gould became Minister for Families, Children and Social Development. In that role, she helped introduce $10-a-day child care, one of the federal government’s major policies.
As the government’s leader in the House of Commons, Gould regularly clashes with Conservative leader Pierre Poièvre.
Gould said in a campaign video that Canadians have “lost trust” in the Liberal Party, adding: “We must earn back their trust. We must rebuild our party so we can continue to build our country.” There is a need.”
Mr Gould, 37, is the youngest candidate in the leadership race so far. She is also the only member of Trudeau’s cabinet to announce her candidacy. Several incumbent ministers have announced that they will not stand in the election.
