of House Ethics Committee Democrats are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss a report on former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to be the next attorney general, NBC News reported Monday.
Several leading Republican senators have called for the report on Gates to be released to the Senate to consider whether to confirm him to the AG post if President Trump formally nominates him. There is.
The Ethics Committee was investigating Gaetz on suspicion of sexual misconduct and illegal drug use. The committee was scheduled to meet last Friday on the report, but the meeting was postponed.
Gaetz, who represented Florida’s congressional district, abruptly resigned from the House last week after President Trump announced he would nominate him to the House of Representatives. His resignation ended the Ethics Commission’s jurisdiction over him.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana. He said he “strongly urges” the commission not to publish its report on Gaetz, arguing that doing so would be a “gross violation of the spirit of protocol, tradition and regulation.”
If confirmed as attorney general, Gates will lead the Justice Department, which previously investigated him for sex trafficking of underage girls. The Justice Department did not file criminal charges against Gates in the case, and Gates has denied any wrongdoing.
On Thursday, lawyers representing women who say they had sexual relations with Gates when they were minors asked for the ethics report to be made public.
