The commander in chief of the Canadian Armed Forces is heading for the exit.
The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed in a media statement on Friday that the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Wayne Eyre, plans to retire this summer.
He has held the position since February 2021, when he replaced retired Gen. Art McDonald as CDS. It is claimed that MacDonald recused himself after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced, but military police later decided not to pursue him.
Eyre is a former commander of the Canadian Armed Forces who took over an organization in crisis after a number of military leaders were accused of inappropriate behavior.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said: “As Chief of Defense Staff, General Eyre helped stabilize the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) during a period of turmoil and led the agency in responding to the many security crises and challenges facing our country and the world. led,” he said. Although there are no term limits, the Secretary of Defense’s term typically lasts approximately three years.
Eyre has become increasingly vocal about the challenges facing the Canadian Armed Forces, including severe personnel shortages, outdated equipment and constant demands for military support, especially in response to domestic crises.
