Former finance minister and deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland is expected to announce her candidacy for Liberal Party leadership within the week, sources tell CBC News/Radio-Canada.
Freeland expects to make a formal announcement before President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in next Monday, the people said.
Freeland resigned from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet last month on the same day he was scheduled to release the government’s fall economic statement.
Following Prime Minister Trudeau’s resignation, calls for his resignation have grown louder. Prime Minister Trudeau announced last week that he would step down once the Liberal Party elects a new leader.
Potential leadership candidates have until January 23 to formally enter the election campaign. The party plans to announce its new leader on March 9th.
More to come…
