Over the past month, the best of European cinema has been celebrated across the continent. And now the winners of the 36th European Film Awards have been revealed…
The five films nominated for Best European Film of 2023 are some of the strongest of the year, and not just in Europe.
Jonathan Glaser’s harrowing Holocaust drama zone of interest; Agnieszka Holland’s breathtaking and tense drama green border; Aki Kaurismäki A cozy Finnish love story Fallen leaves; critically acclaimed French courtroom drama directed by Justine Triet structure of overturning; and Matteo Garrone’s Io Capitanoit’s like green borderwhich tackled the theme of the refugee crisis at Europe’s borders.
The European Film Awards, which honors great achievements in European cinema, has decided to award the top prize to a film directed by Justine Triet. Autumn Anatomy.
The French film took everyone by storm, winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Sandra Hüller.
The film turns a compelling story of a murder in the Alps into a captivating courtroom drama, with Hüller’s masterful performance.
Torie’s unconventional detective stories deal with the messy parent-child relationship and the burden of responsibility in relationships. The director can use the justice system as a springboard to expose deep-seated misogynistic bias, especially when the relationship is publicly dissected for all to see. The main character, Sandra (Hüller), is not the ideal victim who fights to have her innocence heard. She speaks matter-of-factly about the imperfections of her relationships, and she feels like a fully-rounded human being, in contrast to the cliche picture of an impeccable martyr fighting to survive. It will be done.

After winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year, the film is going from strength to strength, winning over audiences and increasingly filling award shelves.
surely, structure of overturning has steadily emerged as an awards favorite, having already won Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best International Film. Gotham Independent Film Awards, won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film. As mentioned in our article, EFA predictionthere was good reason to believe it would win big in every category.
As we saw last year, EFA is not comfortable awarding multiple awards to the same film. love triangle of sadness. The same is the case this year.
Sandra Hüller was nominated twice this year for her performances in Anatomy of a Fall and Zone of Interest, making her a frontrunner for Best Actress. It’s worth it, because she is the beating heart of this film and its complex intricacies. Thanks to her brilliant development, it becomes clear that the film is much more interested in a weightier meditation on perception and storytelling, and as such the enveloping sense of uncertainty becomes addictive. It will be.

meanwhile structure of overturning is a thought-provoking drama with the right emotional depth and a worthy winner, but dare I say it’s a bit overblown. green border and zone of interest It could have been loved more – not just because it’s a great movie, but also because of its diversity.Jonathan Glazer really should have won the Best Director award for his formal audacity and making a Holocaust drama unlike any other, but it’s a shame Agnieszka Holland had so much influence. is green border I went home empty-handed. We hope you will keep an eye out for this during the ongoing awards season.

A good movie requires an equally impressive setup
This year’s European Film Awards once again demonstrated the vibrancy of European cinema through its lineup and nominations.
But if we want to elevate the quality of filmmaking, and establish ourselves as a can’t-miss event, on par with Hollywood awards shows, both in luxury and prestige, we’ll need to step up our aesthetics a bit.
Last year’s ceremony in Iceland showed great anticipation and proclaimed it to be a momentous day. In comparison, this year’s Berlin edition felt a little underwhelming. If the awards ceremony were to be held at the Berlin Arena, a bigger and grander stage would have been needed to showcase 2023’s glorious vintage films. The Berlinale Palast, for example, would have sent a much stronger message. The arena’s low stage and cheap chairs did not suit the conditions, giving the ceremony an unfortunately low-key feel.
And on the other hand, they could also invite the managers of the Berlinale, Cannes and Venice. After all, films that premiered at festivals make up most of the nominations…
As for marketing, billboards around Berlin could have advertised the ceremony a little more.
Europe has nothing to envy Hollywood. Now, it needs a bigger platform to reflect its ambitions. The European Film Academy has a great team responsible behind the scenes and is more than capable of leading the way. That said, awards shows should reflect the quality of the films themselves.
Once again, last year’s 35th edition set an example and was of the highest standard. It was truly a memorable event. Unless this year’s budget cuts are to blame, European films need a little more oomph.
