British actress Emily Blunt mentioned Thurber’s appearance resurfacing on social media in an interview and apologized.
In a clip from The Jonathan Ross Show that first aired in 2012, Blunt describes the waitress as “huge.”
The video was widely shared online this week, with some criticizing Blunt for being “fatphobic.”
The Oppenheimer star later said he was “appalled” by the “very insensitive” and “hurtful” comments.
During the interview, Blunt recalled making the film Looper in the United States and detailed an encounter with a restaurant worker at a local restaurant.
During a visit to a branch of the Chili’s restaurant chain, show host Jonathan Ross said, “When you go to Chili’s, you’ll see why our American friends are so great.”
Brant responded, “Well, the girl who was serving me was huge. I think she got a free meal at Chili’s.”
“There’s nothing wrong with that,” Ross replied.
The 40-year-old actress details the encounter and how the waitress recognized her.
Blunt, who also starred in “The Devil Wears Prada” and “A Quiet Place,” issued a statement Friday apologizing for the comments.
“As I sat on the floor watching this footage from 12 years ago, I just need to address this issue head on,” she said in a statement to People magazine.
“I am appalled by the insensitive and hurtful things I said on my talk show that had no bearing on the story I was trying to say.”
He added: “I’ve always thought of myself as a person who would never dream of offending anyone, so whatever made me say this in that moment, I can’t even recognize what I stand for.
“Still, it happened. I said so. I’m so sorry for the hurt I caused. I was old enough to understand.”
