Toriyama entered the manga industry for the first time at the age of 23 when he entered an amateur manga artist contest in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. From there, Toriyama suddenly became famous in 1980 when he serialized the popular gag manga “Doctor Slump.”
In 1984, Toriyama published the seminal fantasy action-comedy shonen battle series Dragon Ball, which later spawned the hugely popular Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super series. Dragon Ball’s influence later inspired the likes of Eiichiro Oda, Tite Kubo, and Masashi Kishimoto to create One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, and other classics.
Toriyama also played an influential role in gaming history, with his art forming the basis for Dragon Quest, one of Japan’s first console RPGs. In the mid-90s, Toriyama teamed up with Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii and Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi to create Chrono, which is still considered one of the best games of all time.・He is famous for producing “Trigger”.
The last project Toriyama reportedly worked on was an original character design for the upcoming Dragon Ball Z spin-off series, Dragon Ball Daima. Its story follows the chibi-styled adventures of Goku and Vegeta in the whimsical world of Dragon Ball. Sand Land, a game based on another of Toriyama’s works, is scheduled for release in his April.
