Mental Health and Addictions Minister Yaara Sachs says jurisdictions across the country do not have enough beds to support involuntary addiction and mental health treatment.
Conservative leaders this week voiced support for some form of involuntary treatment.
Mental Health and Addictions Minister Yaara Sachs says jurisdictions across the country do not have enough beds to support involuntary addiction and mental health treatment.
Sachs said health care is under the jurisdiction of states and it is up to them to “outline the policies they see fit.”
But before we talk about forced treatment, we need to make sure that appropriate treatment services are provided, she says.
Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poièvre said Thursday he was in favor of compulsory and involuntary drug and psychiatric treatment for minors and prisoners deemed incapable of making decisions for themselves.
Mandatory mental health and addiction care is being considered or expanded in several states as communities struggle to cope with the nation’s overdose crisis.
Poièvre said he is still researching how forced treatment works in adults.
