US President Joe Biden has issued a glowing review of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tenure, crediting him with leaving the world, the continent, and our bilateral relations in a better place than they were in 2015.
Mr. Biden described Mr. Trudeau as a friend, saying the United States has no closer ally and friend than Canada, and said “the same could be said” of Mr. Trudeau.
Biden said Trudeau was the first foreign leader he has met since taking office, and that they spoke on Monday after Trudeau announced his resignation and thanked him for what they had accomplished together.
“From the COVID-19 pandemic to climate change to the scourge of fentanyl, we’ve tackled some of the toughest challenges our country has faced in decades,” Biden said.
“We have stood in solidarity with the Ukrainian people in the face of Russian aggression in defense of Ukraine’s most sacred value: freedom,” the outgoing president added. “We have made generational investments to strengthen our supply chains and rebuild our economy from the bottom up and the middle out.”
Biden said Trudeau “led with commitment, optimism and strategic vision” and that the bilateral relationship “is stronger because of him.”
“Americans and Canadians are safer because of him, and the world is better because of him,” Biden said.
Biden’s comments stand in stark contrast to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s reaction to Prime Minister Trudeau’s resignation. The president-elect used this opportunity to once again propose that Canada merge with the United States.
President Trump: “Many people in Canada love being our 51st province. The United States can no longer suffer from the huge trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to survive.” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said: Knowing this, I resigned.” said in a post on the Truth Social platform.
“If Canada merged with the United States, there would be no tariffs, much lower taxes, and we would be completely safe from the threat of Russian and Chinese shipping that always surrounds Canada. “Yes,” President Trump continued. It’s going to be a great country!!!”
