President Joe Biden is delivering a speech aimed at highlighting his foreign policy accomplishments during his time in office.
The Democratic president’s speech at the State Department in Washington was touted as a victory declaration for “the administration’s efforts to strengthen America and lead the world,” according to the White House.
A week before Biden hands over power to his Republican successor, President-elect Donald Trump, Trump has relentlessly criticized Biden’s record on foreign affairs. Trump has particularly criticized Biden’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.
Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday about the cease-fire agreement in Lebanon and changes resulting from the fall of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, the White House said. Biden also stressed the “immediate need for a ceasefire in Gaza” and the return of Israeli hostages, according to the White House.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters during a preview of Biden’s speech that despite “so much being thrown at us,” the president was confident that “America is in the future.” “We will win the competition towards this goal,” he said.
Biden is expected to convene senior officials at the White House later Monday to brief them on the federal government’s response to the ongoing wildfires that are devastating Los Angeles. Vice President Kamala Harris is also scheduled to attend the press conference.
