President Joe Biden’s outgoing administration is finalizing rules Tuesday that will effectively bar nearly all Chinese-made cars and trucks from the U.S. market as part of a crackdown on Chinese vehicle software and hardware.
The latest U.S. government action against Chinese cars comes after the Commerce Department announced this month that it was considering a similar crackdown on Chinese-made drones, following a significant hike in tariffs on electric vehicle imports last year. I was disappointed.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in an interview with Reuters, citing national security concerns, “There are 2 million Chinese cars on the road and they realize they are under threat. “This is very important because you don’t want to put it away.”
