Canada is sending an additional $40 million in aid to groups supporting Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, after suspending funding to the U.N. relief agency there.
The funds will be donated to organizations including the World Food Programme, UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross, International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen announced on Tuesday.
Canada has cut funding to UNRWA, the United Nations agency supporting Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, following allegations that its staff was involved in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack in Israel.
This came after the agency’s chief fired an employee suspected of being involved in the attack, which sparked an international backlash.
The nature of their alleged involvement was not disclosed.
Canada has so far committed $100 million to humanitarian aid in Gaza.
