saturday night live The cold open echoed Donald Trump’s Bible pitch, with James Austin Johnson returning as the former president to pitch.
This was another case where the show tried to satirize something that hardly needed rewriting.
“Yes, today is Easter. It’s the time of year when I compare myself to Jesus Christ,” Johnson said, echoing Trump. “That’s what I’m doing now, and people seem to accept it. I’m going to continue to do it. If you think this is a bad take, if I start selling Bibles, no matter how strange Just imagine what that would be like. Well, I’m selling Bibles.”
“It sounds like a joke, and it’s a joke in many ways, but it’s also very real. You know, I love the Bible. That’s my favorite look.”
Earlier this week, President Trump posted a video on his Truth social account touting the “God Bless America” Bible, drawing criticism from the religious community and others who saw it as the latest in a long line of religious groups. People ridiculed him. The former president’s efforts to take advantage of endorsement deals. President Trump then decided to repost a meme that compared him to Jesus.
As if to refute suggestions that his Holy Week sales pitch is blasphemous, President Trump today cited Joe Biden’s declaration that Sunday, March 31st, the same day as Easter, is Transgender Visibility Day. released a statement accusing Joe Biden of “blasphemy.” However, Transgender Visibility Day is commemorated on March 31 every year. Easter will be on a different date.
The SNL sketch opens with what appears to be a Resurrection reenactment, with three women who came to anoint Jesus’ body instead witnessing Trump emerge from the tomb.
“Okay, guys, you can go,” Johnson’s Trump said, shooing them away. “bye bye.”
The show then criticized President Trump’s lack of Bible knowledge. He said, “A must read. My favorite part is probably the ending, how it all ends.”
He went on to reveal the “high price of $60.”
“But I’m not doing this for the money,” President Trump said. “I’m doing this for God’s glory and pandering, and mostly for money.”
He continued, “But it’s so sad. Religion and Christianity have completely disappeared from this country and we need to get them back. Without religion, there is no law. There are no mission trips. Mission trips are a lot of fun. You go to Mexico. You build a house. Maybe you even flirt with someone on your last night.”
In the opening, SNL aired one of the week’s other big political news stories. It was NBC News’ decision to remove former RNC chair Ronna McDaniel as a contributor following an internal uprising, just days after her hire.
The opening session ended with President Trump attempting to say the Lord’s Prayer “in the name of the Father and the Son and the Easter Bunny.”
This will continue in the future.
