The planned visit will be the first cruise ship traffic in Nanaimo since before the COVID-19 pandemic, and the industry as a whole is still struggling to recover.
The three ships were scheduled to make a total of six port calls in 2020, but the port call scheduled for May was canceled due to travel restrictions.
No ships carrying tourists docked in Nanaimo in 2021, 2022 or 2023, but when the cruise ship pier opened in 2011, the goal was to have 25 to 30 ships docking in Nanaimo annually. Far from it.
The Seabourn Odyssey carries between 450 and 540 passengers and 330 crew members. She has 225 guest rooms on seven passenger decks and the total length of the ship reaches just under 200 meters (650 ft).
The Oceania Regatta is slightly smaller at 181 meters (594 feet) on the water, but carries between 698 and 803 passengers and 372 crew members.
There are 349 guest rooms on five passenger decks.
“The arrival of these luxury ships will not only boost tourism, but will also provide significant benefits to local businesses and the broader Nanaimo community,” the statement continued. “Once cruise passengers disembark, they explore our vibrant city, dine at our restaurants, shop at our stores, experience Nanaimo’s unique charm and make a significant contribution to the local economy.”
