The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) has identified additional exposure sites associated with the first confirmed measles case. report Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
An additional exposure site on Thursday, March 7, 2024 was identified at 238 Barry Street, Thornton. For a complete list of sites at this address, see: Website.
SMDHU advises anyone who believes they may have been infected with the measles virus to:
- Notify the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit of your exposure by calling Health Connection 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Make sure you and your family have received two doses of the measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV). People born before 1970 are more likely to have had measles as children and are protected. People who are not protected from measles by these measures should contact their health care provider or Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 about getting vaccinated.
- Once developed symptoms, stay home and not attend work, school, or child care (including before and after school programs). Call your health care provider before your visit and let them know you may have measles and need to take additional precautions.
- If you are in a potentially exposed area at the specified date and time and are immunocompromised or unvaccinated (including children under 1 year of age), or are pregnant, please contact Health Connection. SMDHU also offers measles vaccination clinics by appointment at the following locations:

If you have not yet been vaccinated against measles, it is recommended that you receive the following measles (MMR) vaccines:
- Infants 6 to 11 months of age traveling to areas where measles transmission is increasing.
- Children from 4 to 6 years old.
- Children and youth who missed their second dose of the MMR vaccine.
- Adults 18 years of age or older who have previously received one dose of the MMR vaccine are healthcare workers, military members, post-secondary students and are planning to travel outside of Canada, or as recommended by their healthcare provider. You will need to receive a second dose based on the following.
Adults born before 1970 who are unsure of their immune system, are health care workers, military personnel, post-secondary students, are planning to travel outside of Canada, or based on the recommendation of a health care provider. You need to get vaccinated. Measles is a highly contagious airborne virus that spreads easily, especially to people who don’t have immunity or who are vulnerable. Symptoms are similar to the common cold and include a cough, fever, sore eyes that are sensitive to light, a red rash that lasts up to five days, and sometimes small white spots inside the mouth.
